Blood Moon

April 14th/2014 http://www.cnn.com/2014/04/11/tech/innovation/blood-moon/index.htmlBlood moon

Tomorrow on April 15th 2014 there will be a total lunar eclipse called a  blood moon. NASA says the moon will turn a coppery red as it aligns with Earth and Sun, this will happen up to three more times within a year, and a half. So within a year and a half North America will be able to see a total of 4 blood moons. The moon gets its colour during the eclipse as it passes through Earth’s shadow, which will be the colour of the deserts sunset. The blood moons will occur roughly within 6 month intervals on the following dates:

  • April 15th/2014
  • October 8th/2014
  • April 4th/2015
  • September 28/2015

I think that this eclipses looks so cool, and I’m going to look for it tomorrow night. This doesn’t effect me in anyway because its just the moon, but I think that it will be really cool to see I real life, and to get a picture of it, because things look a lot different in pictures than in real life. I think that this will be cool because I’m really into taking nature pictures so if I can get a picture of this that will be so cool.

EXCEL REFLECTIONS

In the unit excel I learned a lot of things that will help me not only with excel, but with other classes whether I’m using excel, or not, it will help me with just simply following instructions, and to not rush things just to take it slow an d perfect my work. One of the things that I have learned not only in excel but in a lot of other units in computers, is to format your work so that it looks nice, and is appropriately styled to what we are working with, this way it will be organized and not all over the place. It can also help with not making our work look really messy. We learned some definitions at the beginning of this unit which was good, because we learn what each thing is, before you start the unit and you don’t have to ask a bunch of questions, but one thing that we learned with that was how to use the snipping tool on our computers. That was really helpful because I use it a lot in business class for different projects and such. We were taught how to use many formulas, and IF statements which I thought were confusing at first, but now they make more sense to me. The IF statements, and formulas are really helpful in class, and if you are just using excel for something.

At first I wasn’t too excited to be doing excel because I didn’t really think that excel had a point, but I realized that it can be used daily in some jobs, and is very useful, and helpful. The formulas make your life so much easier because, if we didn’t have excel then we would have to figure everything out in our head and write it over, and over again, instead we use the auto fill button. I didn’t think that this unit would be to challenging because I already did some stuff on it in business, but we did a lot more things than I thought we would do, and they are all useful, that my business teacher didn’t teach me.

What was good about this experience was that I think that all of the students learned something, because I know that I learned a lot in this unit. What was kind of boring was when we were doing more basic things I already knew, because I either learned it in past grades, or in other classes. I understand what I have learned in this unit because Mr. Nishi went over everything step by step with the whole class, and didn’t just give us a word document saying what to do and let us go do it, he explained everything to us. That’s why I liked the guided practice, and then the independent practice.

I think that this whole unit went very smoothly, because we had reasonable amounts of time to get our work done, everything was pretty self-explanatory, after we did a guided practice on it. I really liked the way we did this unit by doing a guided practice, and then an independent practice because then we get the feel of what we are going to be doing. Then our teacher can make sure we know what we are doing before we do assignments. The one thing that didn’t go to well was the IF statements at first because they were a little confusing, but now they make so much more sense. The IF statements make everything a lot easier when using excel. The strategies I used to help me in this topic was to follow the instructions very carefully because you can easily skip one step and mess everything else up, and have to do your project all over again.

I think that this unit was a very productive unit because I learned a lot more than I expected to learn. What I could have done differently to make class more effective so that I could learn a lot more, was when I was done early I could maybe ask for something else to do to improve my learning even more. If I were to do this unit again then I would likely take more time to do my work to perfect it even more than I did, so that then I could get an even better grade than I got in this unit, this time. I will better prepare myself for other units in my classes by trying to study every night when I don’t have other homework, even if there is no test so I can better myself in the other classes, and get better grades. I need to develop better writing skills for my other classes because my printing I kind of messy, but my handwriting is nice, and work on the IF statements for computer class because I need to remember to put in the brackets. I think that this unit helped me to learn to follow instructions very carefully so that I don’t end up making a mistake.

Christmas Break!

This Christmas break wasn’t really all that exciting. On the first Sunday of the break we had Christmas with my Grandma’s side, it wasn’t all that fun because, there are some really weird people on that side of the family. I have a 2nd cousin, and she will be 3 in February. She is so cute, and i never get to see so it was nice to get to see her again.

The next day we had a Last Christmas which is my Grandpa’s side of the family, and they are really nice. It was more of a relaxed gathering, with less people. It really sucks that there are younger kids on that side of the family. I don’t really have and 1st cousins only one, but a lot of 2nd cousins. Earlier  that day I got the news that my other Aunt is having a baby. Yay. So soon I will have 3 cousins.

On Christmas Eve we had a few people over, but not as many as we usually do, last year we had a supper, but this year we just did appetizers. It was kind of fun but i like it better when we have lots of people over. That’s my favorite part of Christmas is getting together with my family.

Christmas morning we opened out presents from our parents. I got lulu lemon leggings, a lulu lemon sweater, some under armor headbands, and lotion from Bath and Body Works. My favorite present was the Lulu lemon Sweater. After that my Aunts, Uncles, Grandma, and Grandpa came over for brunch. We had Bacon Cups, the’re so delicious, and really easy to make. My mom got a soda streamer for Christmas from us so we fired it up, and tried some, but my dad forgot to let the air out first so it sprayed every where.

On Boxing day my Uncle, his girlfriend, her son, and my cousin came out and we went down to the pasture on the ski-doo’s and had a BBQ, and roasted hot dogs. it was really fun. After that Nikki and i hung out for a bit.

On the past weekend my brother had a hockey Tournament in Lac Du Bonnet, and I didn’t feel like going so i stayed with my Grandparents, and my sister. We played lots of card games, and sorry. On Saturday night we went out for supper to the Rock. I knew Mondays school would be canceled, but didn’t think that Tuesdays would. I just cleaned on those two days, nothing really else.

Dos and Don’ts of a PowerPoint

Tomicrosoft-powerpoint-iconday I was told to write about PowerPoint and what makes them effective.

http://office.microsoft.com/en-ca/powerpoint-help/tips-for-creating-and-delivering-an-effective-presentation-HA010207864.aspx

Microsoft Office said To minimize the number of slides you have to keep your reader’s attention, and to choose a style and font to keep them interested. Avoid narrow fonts, or fancy edges. You should also choose a font size that is easy to read but not too large. Keep your text simple, use bullets or short sentences, be aware that some projectors crop the sides so your sentence may be cropped off if it’s too long. Make sure to include pictures that help people to understand and to get your message out, it also makes it more interesting. The last tip from Microsoft is to CHECK THE SPELLING AND GRAMMAR. This is very important because if you are presenting to your co-workers and you have spelling and grammar errors it doesn’t look to good on your part.

http://www.engr.psu.edu/ce/enve/logan/web_presentations/Effective_ppt_presentations-Logan-11-5-08.pdf

This website says a lot of different things for example before you present checkout the room you are presenting in and make sure all the slides work as the are supposed to. When presenting look at your audience. When using graphs colour coat it so it is easier to read, and add picture to make the graph more effective.

http://gethelp.library.upenn.edu/workshops/biomed/ppt/dodont.html

This site says:

     Do:

  • Be brief
  • Use appropriate fonts
  • run slid show before presenting
  • use appropriate colours so they don’t blend

     Don’t:

  • Put everything you present on the slides
  • use different colors and fonts on every slide unless necessary
  • use bright backgrounds
  • put things that are distracting on the slide

http://amrilradzman.hubpages.com/hub/-This-you-should-avoid-on-your-Powerpoint-Presentation

This says to avoid making a slide with only text, because that is very boring, and then people don’t pay attention. Always choose a font colour that compliments the background colour. Make sure that your font is readable. don’t make the slide to complicated or you wont seem like you know what you are doing. Know your stuff, if you don’t you will get nervous and your presentation wont look as good as it can.

http://www.thinkoutsidetheslide.com/the-top-ten-things-you-can-do-to-improve-your-next-powerpoint-presentation/

Looking for a way to improve your Powerpoint? here are some tips, decide on the goal of the presentation, use visual instead of text its more appealing,  use proper charts and graphs, and practice to get it perfect and that will enhance your presentation even more.

http://www.slideshare.net/mikejeffs/how-to-create-great-slides-for-presentations

This site recommended a number of things:

  • Fewer, larger words, short sentences, and pictures
  • Have interesting fonts but still readable
  • Choose a colour scheme
  • Use cool word play
  • Make use of icons to creat cool images

http://www.speakingaboutpresenting.com/design/powerpoint-design-recommended-tips/

Speaking about presenting says to plan, use a plain background, do lots of research, have one idea per slide, support the headline with graphic evidence, and put lots of detail.

As you can tell lots of them have some of the same, but are yet very different. I hope this will help you to create your own effective yet interesting Powerpoint.

Panda Cam Shut Down

panda-andcubSmithsonian Zoo has shut down there panda cam! Many people are very sad. They say not to worry there are many other animals to watch, but really who wants to watch a naked mole rat. Although there are hippos and bald eagles aswell. There are new panda cams opening soon at the Atlantis, and San Diego Zoo’s.

I chose this article because i just really love panda bears they are so cute. I liked this article because i found it had good information, and it gave some example of what people where saying and thinking.

This is not really relatable to my life because I didn’t watch the panda cam, but I do like panda bears. This will affect people in our community because now people who can’t go to that zoo wont be able to see the pandas. This could be a positive because then they may be putting them out for display at the zoo.

I do have a few questions thought:

Why did they shut the camera down?

When will they be putting the panda on display at the zoo? Is it anytime soon?

The Kindals live, human, screen-controling tech support

Sept. 29/2013 http://www.cnn.com/2013/09/25/tech/mobile/kindle-customer-service/index.html

This article talks about one of the kindle fireKindle-Fire-HD-8 tablets features, the feature is a live video of the tech support person, and allows them to help you and control your screen. It gives you an example of what you can use it for. It also tells you how to use this function, and the different features like being able to slide the live video around the screen, which is good if you need to see different parts of the screen. This is usefull in our society because today almost everyones lives have somesort of technology in it, and the kindle fire is fairley popular, so this feature is probably needed.

I personally like this feature because it can help people who maybe aren’t “technollogy minded”. This caught my attention because i would like to acctually get the tablet. i would recomend reading this artical if you have this tablet or are planning on it. It is an excellent source of information. This artical is relatable to my life because my life is very technology involed (i use my phone to jot down my homework, events hppening, and i use it for edmodo on the go so i always know my homework in computer class.)
